He is the son of the late yachak (spiritual leader) Sabino Gualinga. José Gualinga authored the proposal for the Declaration of Kawsak Sacha (Living Forest), a central initiative in Sarayaku’s defense of their territory as a living being, presented to the General Assembly of the ICCA Consortium in Montreal in 2018. In 2012, Sarayaku won a landmark case against the Ecuadorian State at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
